Wig Terminology. What is a Hand Tied Wig?

If you spend any time on wig websites looking through rows of wig images and product descriptions you will be very familiar with the term Hand Tied Wig or 100% Hand Tied Wig. It is used often to describe a type of wig construction and is often found in pricier wigs owing to the addtional work needed to make this type of wig.  But What is a Hand Tied Wig? and What does it mean for the wearer and why are they better? Reviews by Isabel will answer these questions.

What is a 100% Hand Tied Wig?

A hand tied wig is where all of the hair strands that make up the wig are attached individually by hand. The wig cap is made up of a fine mesh and during the wig making process the wig maker will thread and knot individual hair strands through the gaps in the mesh using a ventilating needle. These knots are all made by hand until the entire cap is covered.  Needless to say hand tying knots is an extremely labor intensive and time consuming process and it can take a wig maker over 100 hours to hand tie and entire wig. This process takes a lot longer than machine stitching lengths of wefted hair onto a machine made cap and the difference in investment is reflected in the price. 100% Hand Tied Wigs are generally a lot more expensive.  Hand Tied Human Hair Wigs are most common although the feature is also available in higher end Synthetic Hand Tied wigs.

Why is a Hand Tied Wig Better?

The secret lies in the hand tied and knotted hair fibers. When each fiber is individually tied to wig cap it moves and can be styled as an individual strand and therefore more closely resembles the characteristics of biological hair. Wefted hair by comparison is a strip onto which hair strands are sown. These strips come in lengths and are machine stitched onto a wig cap. The hair fibers are connected and tend to move together and not individually and are not as natural looking as  of hair that has been attached to a monofilament.

  1. Natural Movement: The movement of the hair fiber is the closest to natural because it is individually tied rather than mounted in wefts.
  2. Multi Directional Parting: The wig can be parted in either direction and the look is natural and closely resembles biological hair. These styling options are not possible with a machine made, wefted wig cap.
  3. More lightweight. The density of hair fiber is less and this lead to a lighter, cooler and less dense styling.
  4. Softer Feel: The soft mesh is also softer to touch and feels better against the scalp for those with sensitive scalps.

The Hand Tied Wig Cap.

In premium 100% hand tied wig caps, the lace front component and the monofilament components are tied by hand as well as the stretch back part of the wig cap.  This provides an overall natural movement and look and also creates a lightweight and cool experience as well as a comfortable, secure fit. A French Drawn Wig cap will also add an additional layer of fine silk on the inside of the wig cap to provide a barrier between the scalp and the knots.  This is the ultimate in comfort and luxury and ideal for someone with a sensitive scalp.
